Selling Your Gold in New York: What to Expect

A drawer of broken chains, an inherited bracelet, coins from a collection, a bar bought years ago — most households have gold they no longer wear or use. Selling it should be simple and transparent, but many people put it off because they are unsure what happens inside a buyer's office, or how the price they are offered is worked out. This guide walks through our buyback process step by step, exactly as it happens at our New York store, so you know what to expect before you come in. One point up front: testing and quotes are always free, and there is never any obligation to sell.

What We Buy

  • Gold jewelry of any karat — including broken, tangled, or out-of-fashion pieces; the value is in the metal
  • Gold coins and gold bars, from any mint or refiner
  • Scrap gold, dental gold, and estate pieces
  • Silver, platinum, and palladium items as well
  • Trade quantities — jewelers, dealers, and manufacturers are served through our wholesale desk, backed by our refining and assay services

Not sure whether something is gold at all? Bring it in anyway. Testing is free, and we will tell you what you have.

What to Bring

Bring the items you are considering selling, and a valid government-issued photo ID — like all legitimate buyers, we are required to verify the identity of anyone we buy from and to record the transaction. If you have certificates, receipts, or appraisals for any piece, bring those too; they are not required, but they can speed things up. That is everything you need — no appointment is necessary.

The Process, Step by Step

  1. Walk in. Visit us at 580 Fifth Avenue, Suite 521, in the Diamond District. No appointment is needed — come in during business hours with your items and your ID.
  2. Sorting and inspection. Your items are sorted in front of you by type and karat. Hallmarks and stamps (10k, 14k, 18k, and so on) are checked, and anything that turns out not to be gold is set aside and handed straight back to you.
  3. Testing — in front of you. Each piece is tested to confirm its purity. We use XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing, which reads the metal's content without damaging the piece, alongside traditional testing methods where appropriate; for refining lots, fire assay gives the definitive result. Nothing is tested out of your sight, and your items never leave the counter.
  4. Weighing. Your gold is weighed on precision scales, in front of you, and the weight is shown and explained — you will always know exactly how many grams or troy ounces you have.
  5. Your offer, explained. The offer is calculated from the live gold price at that moment, your items' weight, and their purity, less refining and processing costs. We walk you through the numbers line by line — you can follow the live price on our prices page, on your own phone, while we do it.
  6. Your decision. The quote is free and comes with no obligation. If the offer works for you, we complete the purchase and pay you the same day. If it does not, you take your items home — no fee, and no pressure.

How Your Offer Is Calculated

The math is straightforward, and any buyer should be willing to show it to you. Gold jewelry is rarely pure gold: it is alloyed for strength, and the karat tells you the purity — 24k is pure gold, 18k is 75% gold, 14k is about 58.5% gold, and 10k is about 41.7%. Your offer starts from the melt value: the weight of your items, multiplied by their purity, multiplied by the live gold price. Refining and processing costs are then deducted to reach the buyback offer. Because offers are based on the live market price, they move as the market moves — the same items can be worth more or less on a different day. If a buyer cannot explain how they reached their number, that is reason enough to walk away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment to sell my gold?

No. Walk in during business hours with your items and a photo ID, and we will test and quote them while you wait. If you are bringing a large quantity, a call ahead on +1-212-354-4653 helps us serve you faster.

Is the quote really free?

Yes. Testing and quoting are free, with no obligation to sell. If you decide against it, your items are returned to you and there is nothing to pay.

Do you buy broken or damaged jewelry?

Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, bent rings, and scrap of any kind are bought for their metal content — condition does not matter. We also buy dental gold and estate pieces.

What ID do I need?

A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport. Buyers are required to verify ID and record purchases, which protects both you and us.

How and when do I get paid?

If you accept our offer, you are paid the same day, before you leave the store. The quote itself is based on the live gold price at the time you sell.

Do you buy coins and bars, or only jewelry?

Both — and silver, platinum, and palladium as well. We buy bullion products from any mint, jewelry and scrap, and trade quantities from jewelers, dealers, and manufacturers.
